How to remove late payments from your credit report

One 30 day late can drop a score fast. Here's how to go after late payments on your reports yourself.

The short version:
  1. Find every late mark on all 3 reports, month by month
  2. Match each one against your bank statements
  3. Dispute every late that's wrong with each bureau reporting it
  4. For the rest, send the lender a goodwill letter

Step 1: Find every late mark

Open the payment history grid on each account in all 3 reports. Late marks show as 30, 60, 90 or more days late, by month. Write down the account, the bureau and the exact month and year of each one.

Step 2: Match them to your records

Pull your bank statements for those months. Look for payments that cleared on time, payments made during a hardship plan or deferment, and months reported differently on different bureaus.

Step 3: Dispute the wrong ones

For every late that doesn't match your records, dispute it with each bureau that reports it. Name the month, say it was paid on time or reported wrong, and attach the bank statement. Also contact the lender directly and ask them to correct it with all 3 bureaus.

Step 4: Goodwill letters for the rest

If a late is on there and you want it gone, write the lender a short goodwill letter. Explain what happened, point to your payment history since, and ask them to remove the late mark as a courtesy. Keep it short and honest. Lenders say yes more than people expect, especially on a single late on an account that's otherwise clean.

Step 5: Track every answer

Bureaus generally have 30 days to answer a dispute. Pull your reports after the results come back and compare. Anything still showing gets your next round.

Common questions

Can late payments be removed from a credit report?

Yes. Late payments reported wrong can be disputed with each bureau, and lenders can remove a late mark as a courtesy through a goodwill letter.

What is a goodwill letter?

A short letter to your lender explaining what happened and asking them to remove a late payment as a courtesy.

Does one late payment really matter?

Yes. A single 30 day late can lower a score noticeably, which is why it's worth going after.

Do I need to dispute with all 3 bureaus?

Only with the bureaus that show the late mark. Check all 3, because each can be different.
